How to use the break-even calculator

  1. Enter the values or text requested by the tool.
  2. Choose the available options and run the tool.
  3. Review the result.

Worked example

Fixed costs of 1,000, selling price of 50 and variable cost of 30 require 50 units to break even.

Understanding the result

Contribution per unit is selling price minus variable cost. Required units are rounded up because you usually cannot sell part of a unit.

Frequently asked questions

Why must selling price exceed variable cost?

Each sale must contribute toward fixed costs. If contribution is zero or negative, this model cannot reach break even.
